BLOOD USAGE UPDATE:
American Red Cross Central Ohio Blood Services Region

Friday, April 20, 2012

Young patient in need of extreme amounts of blood

DONORS NEEDED NOW TO REPLENISH SUPPLY

Some patients require many units of blood products. This means those patients need the support of many donors.

Here is a current example from just one Central Ohio hospital:
 Type O-positive female patient in her 20’s with internal bleeding. Hospital has requested:
o 100 pints of red blood cells
o 105 units of plasma
o 10 single donor platelets
o 6 platelet pools (pools of 5)
o 6 cryoprecipitate pools (pools of 5)
This one patient alone may be supported by as many as: 285 donors

An average of 800 blood donations are needed every single day in Central Ohio to support patients being treated at 41 local hospitals. More blood donations are needed now to help replenish the large amounts of blood needed to help save the life of this one patient. You can help by giving now.

New Scams on Retirees

04.19.12

Latest Targets of Job Scams? Retirees.

4/13/2012
As older Ohioans seek to supplement their incomes or find work to end long-term unemployment, scam artists increasingly are targeting them with offers of online business opportunities or other work-at-home jobs.

‘Web Malls’ and Other Ploys
In one scenario, an older consumer sees an ad or receives a call from someone offering a great work-at-home opportunity: the chance to open a “web mall” where businesses pay to advertise on the consumer’s website.

The consumer must pay several thousand dollars in advance to set up the website, but once the site is established, the consumer supposedly will receive a profit every time someone clicks on an ad. Plus, if a click leads to a sale, the consumer will earn a percentage of that sale.

Unfortunately, the claims are exaggerated, and the web mall likely will not generate any money for the consumer despite the thousands of dollars the consumer paid in advance.

Similarly, a con artist might offer consumers the chance to “get into the credit card business” and make thousands of dollars processing credit card payments. In order to get started, consumers must provide their own credit card number. By the time consumers realize it is a scam, the con artist racks up thousands of dollars in charges on the consumer’s account.

Other scammers claim consumers can make money by issuing loans to individuals with poor credit. Consumers pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for “lead lists” of potential creditors, but they never receive any useful information or make any money.

Why Older Ohioans Are Susceptible

One consequence of the Great Recession is that unemployment isn’t just a younger person’s problem.

While younger adults still are more likely to be unemployed than their older counterparts, older workers are more likely to experience long-term unemployment, according to a recent AARP study.

Plus, older adults may have excellent credit but less knowledge about how to make money online, making them ideal targets for job scams, especially scams involving the Internet.

Of all the “business and work opportunity” complaints filed with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office in 2011, nearly 14 percent came from consumers who indicated they were 60 years or older. That’s higher than the overall percentage of complainants 60 or older for all categories of complaints.

Signs of a Scam

Regardless of your age, watch for signs of a job scam, such as:
Requests for your credit card number
Large up-front payments required to start the business
Making thousands of dollars working from home
Evaluating a wire transfer service
Operating a web mall
Training to sell items online effectively
Becoming a mystery shopper.
Requests for personal information or account numbers
Paying to get exclusive information about jobs
Being directed to an obscure website that promises “free” credit scores

If you or someone you know is the victim of a potential scam, immediately report it to law enforcement and notify the payment provider. For example, if the money was sent via wire transfer, report the possible fraud to the wire transfer company. If a credit card was used, check the back of a recent credit card statement for instructions on disputing charges.
