Public Announcement

(September 5, 2017) – The Village of Hebron received notification from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) that mosquitoes trapped in two locations of town have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The traps were set on August 15 at the end of Hamilton and Wooster Streets and the village became aware of the results from the ODH Laboratory on September 2.

The village sprays the community weekly for mosquitoes during the summer months and has been trapping mosquitoes at various sites to be sent to ODH for West Nile Virus testing.

According to information from the Ohio Department of Health’s website, about 80 percent of people will not experience any symptoms if bitten by a West Nile Virus- infected mosquito. However, about 1 in 150 people can develop a severe illness.

“Hebron is proactive in reducing the mosquito population,” Village Administrator Ralph Wise said. “With these positive test results, residents are strongly encouraged to apply mosquito repellent when outdoors and to eliminate standing water on their property to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.”
