(July 17, 2018) – The Village of Hebron received notification from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) that four pools of mosquitoes trapped at Evans Park have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The traps were set on July 10 and the village became aware of the results from the ODH Laboratory on July 17, 2018.
The village sprays the community weekly for mosquitoes during the summer months and has been trapping mosquitoes at various sites to be sent to ODH for West Nile Virus testing. Hebron also sets out larvicide briquettes to control the mosquito population.
According to information from the Ohio Department of Health’s website, about 80 percent of people will not experience any symptoms if bitten by a West Nile Virus- infected mosquito. However, about 1 in 150 people bitten by an infected mosquito can develop a severe illness.
The state agency has also reported positive West Nile virus tests in four other Licking County locations.
“Hebron is proactive in reducing the mosquito population,” Village Administrator Ralph Wise said. “With these positive test results, residents are strongly encouraged to apply mosquito repellent when outdoors and to eliminate standing water on their property to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.”

Each Friday morning at approximately 3:00 AM a member of the Public Works Department will be spraying for mosquitoes as weather permits. In the case of inclement weather, the day of the week may change. We will not spray on mornings with rain, high winds or temperatures below 60 degrees. The employee will not spray in an area where people are outdoors at the time of spraying. The spraying will continue until further notice.
The driver will have information on the spraying agent with him; a copy is also on file at the Hebron Municipal Complex for review.
Anyone with respiratory problems should close their windows and remain inside during the time spraying is conducted.
